Unsaid
conjure meaning out of the spaces
moonlight
in between hearts
holding space
{ ask forgiveness }
take a breath
hold your anger until you can't take it
smell fresh crisp breeze
the angle of your cigarette pointed to the sidewalk
you're real good at hiding it
your black coffee
your absurd optimism
your eyes that don't understand me
the questions you don't want to ask
that I can't answer
the feeling that's mutual
what we walk right past
burned enough to know what's not worth it
crazy enough to project that I ever meant something
morning breeze
that soothed my tired arms, weary eyes.
I think you waited for me to walk by
my sane side figures that's not quite possible.
funny how bad I want it to be true.
true
to
be
true
can't it be something magical?
the space between me and you
can't I make it something fun to do?
walk around the block
hope I run into you
to barely say hi,
run off before my words go too far
soon enough,
I won't be here
so this dreaming won't dream very far
not dangerous
not insincere
just the most excited
I've been
about someone in years.

Cheap Shot
Where I couldn’t reach you
from underneath a rushing current
I was drowning
you started running
find love in something less rotten—
someone not suffering.
Massive Fish Skulls
hold me
i protest but give in
let the tiny rocks
broken shells
sting the soles of my feet
I’ll endure it all for you
focus, gaze
up into wisps of clouds
striking blue sky background
you see how far you can take it

I like how the longing stays suspended in the space of what remains unsaid. “Funny how bad I want it to be true” makes the whole piece feel very human: it’s less about what happens, and more about what we keep hoping might happen.
